Quite a few patients come to the Washington Heel Pain Center with a sudden onset of heel pain. The majority of these people seem to be athletes who have not had a previous history of heel pain but have been doing some sort of activity that caused increased pressure on the bottom of the foot and has had pain since.
The majority of these people will experience some type of burning type sensation in the bottom of their foot or we can see swelling and a throbbing type sensation. The most common diagnosis is rupture of the plantar fascia and this is a fairly treatable condition as long as you see a foot and ankle specialist. Typically athletes will return to full activity levels and not have any long-term complications.
